Lesson plan for Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012

Hello everyone. I'm sorry I'm not able to be there today to get the lab started, but Amber isn't feeling well so I'm home with her. Today you will be watching one of Mr. Anderson's videos followed by an animation on the light reactions of photosynthesis (see the links below). Please take notes as you watch the video. My suggestion is to take separate notes in your normal notebook, rather than trying to fill out the guideline that I provided you.

After the videos, you may either work on your study guides or begin your take home metabolism test. The test is due the Tuesday that we return from break. Have a good day.

Assignments for Monday and Tuesday Dec. 10 & 11

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. Before I get to the assignments, I have a few housekeeping things to share with you:
  1. The learn site is down and the tech dept is unsure when it will be back up.
  2. I have graded about half of the projects, but will need some more time to finish it up. I will continue working on it tonight, but I probably won't be putting grades in until Monday evening, at the earliest.
  3. The cell membrane grades and extra credit reading guides will be delayed as well. I apologize.
Here's what you should be working on over the next two days:
  1. Click here to access the enzyme webquest. I have not made any copies of this. You are welcome to download your own copy from here and fill it in as you go on your computer (don't worry about formatting). Otherwise please click the link, download as a pdf, and then print it off. YOU MAY WORK WITH A PARTNER ON THIS, BUT YOU EACH NEED YOUR OWN DOCUMENT. This assignment is due by the end of the block Tuesday.
  2. Work on your osmosis/diffusion lab notebook completion. You do NOT need to have an introduction, but you should have every other component in your notebook. Every individual is responsible for having their notebook done, but you will only turn in one for the group. This assignment is due by the end of the block Tuesday and should be turned in at that time.
  3. Work on your ch. 8-10 study guides. No due date is set on these yet.
  4. TUESDAY ONLY - You are welcome to play Cell Craft. Click here to get to the game
  5. Anything else Coach M says :)
I look forward to seeing you all on Wed. You should watch Mr. Anderson's intro to photosynthesis and cell respiration prior to Wednesday's class. Click here to get to the video.

Introduction to Metabolism - Assignment for Thursday

Its time to start talking about energy usage within the cells, thus we are beginning our metabolism unit that will focus on cell respiration and photosynthesis. I've started putting together a playlist on the Youtube channel for this unit so when you get a chance, please check out the videos. This unit will include chapters 8-10.

Things to do before Thursday's class:
1. Preview/read chapter 8 (have the chapter read prior to Friday's class)
2. Watch the video posted at the end of this entry.

Things to do before Friday's class:
1. Finish revisions to the cell membrane drawings (they are due this day)
2. Finish reading chapter 8
3. Reading guides for the cell unit are due (ch. 6 & 7) if you did these.

Other items:
1. The osmosis/diffusion lab will be due on Tuesday. As a group you will select a lab notebook to submit to be checked. However, all members are to complete all portions of the lab in their notebooks.
2. Read chapters 8-10 within the next week.

Good luck.

Cell Transport Video

Once again congrats to everyone on their great work on the cell war project. Please be patient with me in the grading process as its going to take awhile for me to filter through everything. I suggest you tweet about your success in the voting process, regardless of place. You may want to start your campaign for next year too :)

Well, no luck on getting the video I recorded to work right. I guess we will have to spend a little more time in class discussing it. Oh well. In the meantime, please check out the video from Mr. Anderson:

Assignments to be completed prior to 11-26-12

Hello everyone. First of all, I'd like to wish everybody a Happy Thanksgiving. I hope you take the time to enjoy all of the great fellowship, food, and football (OK Lions fans, it may not fit under great) associated with the holiday.

Secondly, I know its a break but we can't take our foot completely off the gas so you do have several activities to complete prior to Monday's class:

1. Make sure your campaign videos and posters are digitized and posted to you blog. Also send out multiple tweets trying to get people to view your videos and posters. Also, be prepared for your poster presentations on Monday.

2. Read chapters 6 & 7. You should have already gone through chapter 6. You can still earn the extra credit for completing the reading guides.

3. Watch and take notes on the following video:
If the video doesn't work, click here

Activity to complete by no later than Tuesday, 11-20-12

I've read through all of your KWLs and unfortunately they weren't thorough enough for me to get a good understanding of where we need additional support. We will do a brief walkthrough of the cell on Monday in class, but there's a great resource out there that I think many of you would find helpful. Go to www.cellsalive.com and explore the site as it is quite thorough. You may want to pay particular attention to the cell models section as it has each of your cell organelles listed/labeled as well as it explains the role of each organelle. Spend at least 15 minutes navigating the site prior to Tuesday's class.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and keep up the good work with #shscellwar. Listen to the announcements Monday and Tuesday as well :)

Lesson Plan for Monday November 12, 2012

Hello everyone. I hope you all enjoyed your weekend. Hard to believe that it is the last full week before Thanksgiving already.

Here's the drill for today:
1. Reminders:
  • Test on Chapters 2-5 is Wednesday. We will review Tuesday. All assignments are due on this date. Everyone will be doing both the multiple choice and free response portions of the test on Wednesday and both portions of the test WILL BE TIMED. Its "time" to get acquainted with the stress of being timed. We most likely will spill into reading time on test day.
  • Blog entry for this week is already posted so please complete this soon.
  • Next unit is cells so begin previewing chapters 6 & 7. Shorter unit :)
2. When finished with today's video, you may use the remainder of the time to prep for Wednesday's test and/or work on your study guides. There are numerous people who have not picked up the carb, lipid, or protein study guides yet. Extras are available in the extras bin. There is NOT a nucleic acid study guide required for this unit.

Weeks 9 Blog Entry & Updates

Here's the topic for this round of blog entries. I'd like for you to post about which of the four macromolecules you would rather be - a lipid, carbohydrate, nucleic acid, or a protein. Begin by declaring which macromolecule you would rather be and give some background information about the macromolecule (how it forms, role it plays within the organism, etc.). Then explain why you would prefer to be that macromolecule. Also include appropriate pictures that go with your topic.

In regards to updates, here it is:
  • All grades are finally completed, updated, and in Power School.
  • The last day to turn in your animal behavior lab revision is Nov. 12. Whatever your grade is on this date becomes your permanent grade for the lab.
  • The biochemistry unit test will be WED, NOV. 14.

Evolution unit is over; time for biochemistry

I hope to get the tests scored by the end of the day on Thursday, and the free response items scored by Monday.

Tomorrow we will take our last sampling of plants for NPP and harvest the seeds. You should be thinking about what treatment you want to apply to your plants for the inquiry portion of the lab. You will be planting your seeds and beginning this on Monday.

In order to prepare for the lessons for the remainder of the week, please watch the videos below. We will discuss chemistry on Thursday and hopefully get to properties of water on Friday.

TEST WED & Weekly Blog Entry

First of all, the evolution test will be this Wednesday. Please look through all of your notes, check out the evolution play list on on the mrlandryshs Youtube channel (see link to the left), and look for AP biology vocab sets on www.quizlet.com Additionally, there is a plethora of information on the share site, including the what to know summaries and a necessary vocabulary list (maybe make your own quizlet cards). All work from this unit will be due on Wednesday, including all of your study and reading guides, as well as the HW lab that I have not yet collected. We will do some review activities on Tuesday and get the clickers out to see where we are at with this topic.

Secondly, this weeks blog entry is a free write or you can develop an evolution quizlet set and embed it into your blog (or post the link). If completing the free write, all I ask is that your entry have a biology basis to it. Maybe you write about your class experiences thus far, or a current news topic, or even share a tidbit of biology knowledge that you have that most are not aware of.

FYI - the pacing thus far has not been slightly slow these first two units, but that is because it has all been new material for most of you. The pace will be picking up starting on Thursday as we will begin looking at biological molecules within the body (biochemistry). For those of you looking to get ahead, we will be looking at chapters 2-5 for the next unit.

Good luck!

Homecoming Week Entry & New YouTube Playlist

Biology business first - I've put together a playlist of evolution videos on my YouTube Channel. Some will be assigned as homework, some shown in class, but either way they are great study tools. Check them out: http://www.youtube.com/user/MrLandrySHS Additionally you should be completing your reading that go with the evolution unit over the next week (Chapters 22.2, 22.3, and 23-26 (all))

Blog entry this week is a more fun one :) Since this is homecoming week here at SHS and we do the best homecoming in the world, I'd like you to reflect on your homecoming experiences over the past several years (including this year). Remember you are writing to a worldwide audience so show your readers that SHS homecoming has no equal. I suggest you start by giving a brief summary of how homecoming works here at SHS, then share your experiences with it. This is an open reflection entry so you can take this in whatever direction you wish. Have fun with it :)

Proper commenting and Week Two Entry

What a great start to the semester. I haven't had a chance to look very closely at your blogs yet, but I look forward to doing so this week. I thought I'd take a minute to discuss commenting on other people's blogs.

There is nothing worse than pouring your heart and soul into a published work and getting a response like "Nice!" or "Good job!", other than getting negative responses to your work :) Think about when you've posted something spectacular on Facebook or told a friend or family member about a great accomplishment, and all they have responded with is a simple statement. Well, blogging is the same way.

When people blog, they do so with the intent of getting constructive feedback from their readers. Often this feedback reinforces the feelings/thoughts of the author while at other times it may challenge them into going farther into the topic. That is what I am hoping for with these blogs.

Therefore, I'd like to request that when you leave comments for your fellow classmates, please take the time to make thought provoking and/or constructive feedback. For example, instead of making a comment that says, "Yeah, me too", instead say "I'm taking three science classes right now too. Maybe when can study together since we have so many classes in common." You should always try to include a part of the author's blog entry in the comment to show that you truly read and reflected upon the author's entry. Feel free to look through some of last year's blogs to see examples of proper commenting.

For more information on good blog commenting, check out this source:
http://bestbloggingtipsonline.com/10-reasons-no-one-notices-your-blog-comment/

Here's the prompt for your blog entry this week:
  • What topic are you most looking forward to in this class? Why?
  • What topic are you least looking forward to in this class? Why?
  • Anything else you wish.

Lesson Plan for Thursday September 6, 2012

Good morning everyone. I decided to change things up today, so we will continue our discussion on behavior on Friday. Today's topics are going to be looking more in depth at scientific inquiry (even though the tutorial says scientific method) and setting up your blogs (which is actually going to partially act as the "publish your findings" portion of scientific inquiry.

Several housekeeping items before you get started. First, the unit one wiki/sharesite is completely stocked with all of the resources you will need to be successful throughout the ecology unit. Remember to put @sparta.lan at the end of your user name.

Additionally, your goal should be to have chapters 50 & 51 read by the end of the weekend.

Here's the plan for today's block:

1. Complete the textbook quality inventory sheet.

2. Subscribe by email to the blog. Put your email address in the box at the top and click submit. You can also choose to become a follower.

3. Create your blog. There are many free blog providers out there including www.blogger.com, www.edublogs.com, www.wordpress.com (this requires you to download free software so may not be the best option if you work on this at school), www.weebly.com, Google apps (available from the school website under "Other Information", or others that you can find by a simple google search. If you have a GMail account, blogger is my preference as it comes with your Google account and it is relatively easy to use. Google apps is a safe one that requires no signing up as you already have an account as a Sparta student. Please don't hesitate to ask for help with getting this setup.
  • Your blog can be as fancy as you want it to be. You can jazz it up similar to the ones I use for my classes or you can use the basic formats that are provided.
  • Create your first blog entry. The topic for your entry should be as follows, and should be written in a paragraph format (don't just answer the questions):
    • Brief introduction of yourself (interests, career aspirations, etc.)
    • Why are you taking this course?
    • What do you hope to get out of this course?
    • Include a picture of some sort that relates to your posting.
  • Send me an email (mrlandryshs@gmail.com) that includes the URL to your blog so I can link it to my blog.
4. Go the following website tutorial on the "scientific method" and complete the tutorial and then the experiment activity. http://www.gc.maricopa.edu/biology/glacier/scientific_method/

5. Check out all of the materials available on the learn site (wiki). Look for the link on this blog.

6. Find a good book to read during reading time for the next several weeks, unless you prefer to read your AP Biology :)

Have a good day everyone. Be ready for behavior on Friday as well as some more scientific inquiry review for biology I. Chapter 50 will be covered in class on Monday.

AP playlist of topics we won't get to before the test

Hey guys. Unfortunately, our 4x4 block schedule has one limitation: we are unable to get through all of the material before the test. I've put together a play list of topic videos by Mr. Anderson at Bozeman HS in MT that hopefully will help bridge the gap on the material we won't have time to talk about in class. See the videos below and follow the link to get to additional one. Good luck. Here's the link to the rest of the playlist: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL22546FC76B87C89D&feature=mh_lolz

AP Lab Videos

Took less time than expected, but here's a link to the play list for the AP lab videos done by Mr. Anderson in MT. Here's the link to the playlist: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL0B4CED0AB112B993

AP Test Review Materials

Its official - I've finally put together a document that shows the content that we won't be getting to prior to the test. Please go to the class wiki for this document. Additionally, I added some AP exam prep materials to a new folder called "Test Materials", and it includes an overall review as well as a lab review. Next up - video review play list on YouTube. Good luck in your prep!

Blog topic for week

This week is a free write so you can write about a topic of your choice. I will be plugging in your first four week's worth of entries into the gradebook soon.

Monday, February 27, 2012

Blog Topic for this week

Every year in general biology us biology teachers spend a significant amount of time with our students discussing the topics of diffusion and osmosis (in addition to other means of transport across the cell membrane) and students do well on the quiz. Yet, every time us chemistry, forensic science, and anatomy teachers talk about this topic with former biology students, they draw a blank.

For this week I would like you to explain to a sophomore the basics of diffusion (simple and facilitated), osmosis, and active transport using your blog. Additionally, include your advice on what a sophomore can do to help remember these topics for future study. Finally, include a picture that shows these topics effectively and include it in your entry.

I will be discussing these topics with my sophomore classes next week and am going to have them use your blog entries to help them better learn these topics, so be watching for comments from other students. I'll also be sharing this with Mrs. McKinley's classes so this will be your first entry that will have a larger audience. Good luck.

Biology in the News

As I was searching for an opener for tomorrow's class I came across an article on Biology News Net called "Tiny, implantable medical device can propel its way through bloodstream". I thought this was a pretty neat topic so I've posted the site below. Also, let this serve as warning that Biology in the News will be a blog topic soon.

Lesson Plan for Wed. Feb. 22, 2012

Hello everyone. First of all, please make sure you turn in your lab reports today. I will be there to pick them up today and hope to have them graded and back to you by no later than Monday. Also, please note that I have posted the blog entry for this week and its the posting following this one.

Here's today's plan:

1. Watch the video below on cell compartmentalization and the importance of maintaining an efficient surface area to volume ratio in the cell membrane (If the video doesn't load, click this link):

2. Watch a less interesting video with me narrating it (if video doesn't load, click this link):

3. Complete the Venn diagram assigned in the above video (there should be copies of the required organelles/structures in the classroom) and work on your cell study guides.

Have a good day.

Blog Entry 4

This week's entry is as follows:
If you had to do the job of any cell organelle (including the cell membrane and cell wall), which one would you choose and why. Additionally, provide a brief description of what that particular cell organelle does and provide a picture that shows that organelle at work (or minimally shows that organelle within the cell).

Tuesday, February 14, 2012

Blog Entry for Week 3

Your prompt for this week is to write a one paragraph or more reflection on this week's lab over enzyme activity. You must include a picture or video that tightly relates to enzyme activity.  With it being a reflection, the writing is open ended and you can take it in whatever direction you wish. Good luck and I look forward to reading your entries.

Lesson plan for Wednesday, Feb. 8

Hey everyone. Unfortunately Amber is still sick and I am once again home with her. I will be back on Thursday unless this crud passed on to me, but my chapped and dried skin from continuously washing my hands will hopefully prevent me from getting it.

Today I've put together two videos of me going through the carbon chemistry and macromolecules, centering in on carbohydrates. You should watch the videos and take notes on the material.

Upon completion of this you will have time to edit your blogs, post comments on other people's blogs, and work on either the carbohydrates study guide, wrap up other past work, or move ahead. Please read ch. 5 prior to tomorrow's class. Have a good day.

Lesson Plans for Tuesday, Feb. 7

Sorry for being gone again today but my daughter is still sick. Here's the plan for today:

1. Updates:
  • I will be uploading some new versions of the ch. 4 & 5 PowerPoints where I have taken the most important information and changed its font color to blue, and the black font text is secondary information.
2. Watch the video that is below. It is a summary from ch. 4 & intro to ch. 5 (if the video doesn't work, click here):

3. Next you can continue working on your things from yesterday and can start working on the carbohydrates study guide.

I should be back tomorrow and we will review all of the stuff from ch. 4 and the first part of ch. 5 on carbohydrates. We will then move into proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids and begin preparing for our first lab on enzymes. Have a good day.

Writing Prompt for This Week

Here's the prompt for your blog entry this week:
  • What topic are you most looking forward to in this class? Why?
  • What topic are you least looking forward to in this class? Why?
  • Anything else you wish.
Additionally, don't forget to leave comments for other people in the class. Thus far, I have seen very few comments. Here's to a good week :)
